What To Know Before Buying Pressure Treated Lumber
Above Ground vs. Ground Contact: PT lumber is treated to different retention levels depending on its use. Above-ground lumber is rated for parts of a structure that stay dry and elevated, like railings or joists, while ground contact lumber is treated to a higher retention level for posts, footings, or anything touching or buried in soil.
Fasteners: The chemicals used in pressure treating can corrode standard steel fasteners over time. Use hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel screws, nails, and connectors rated for treated wood to avoid premature rust and structural failure — and avoid mixing hot-dip galvanized and stainless steel fasteners on the same project, since the two metals can corrode each other.
Moisture and Shrinkage: PT lumber is often treated and shipped while still wet. Expect some shrinkage, warping, or surface checking as it dries out on-site. Let it acclimate before painting or staining, and leave appropriate gaps between boards to account for movement.
Safety Guidelines: Wear gloves and a dust mask when cutting or sanding PT lumber, and wash exposed skin after handling. Never burn treated wood scraps — modern PT lumber is treated with copper-based preservatives that release harmful compounds when burned. Dispose of offcuts according to local waste guidelines rather than in a wood stove or fire pit.
